parallel AI agent git worktree management
A fast-growing Rust CLI with real adoption, but it's a thin wrapper over git worktree with no clear paid surface — better as a feature than a business.
Why now?
AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex) are increasingly run in parallel, and each needs its own working copy; the repo's topics list both agents and claude-code, and it went from creation (2025-10-17) to ~10.8k stars with 524 stars today, showing fast recent organic pull. Zero HN/Reddit discussion means demand is visible in stars but not yet validated as deep workflow lock-in.
The gap
Worktrunk is a narrow Rust CLI over native git worktree with no UI, no billing layer, and a NOASSERTION license. That leaves room for a more opinionated, commercially licensed product bundling worktree orchestration with agent-session management, cleanup, and visibility. The gap is real but thin: the primitive is native git, so any wedge must come from workflow polish, not core capability.
Main competitor
Native git worktree itself, plus parallel-agent tooling agent vendors (Claude Code, Codex) may ship natively; Worktrunk is the closest direct comparable at 10.8k stars and 399 forks.
Execution plan
- Fork or clean-room reimplement the worktree lifecycle (create, list, prune, switch) in Rust or Go under a permissive license so commercial wrapping is unambiguous.
- Add the layer Worktrunk lacks: per-agent session metadata, branch-to-agent mapping, stale-worktree garbage collection, and a status view of what each parallel agent is doing.
- Ship a thin local dashboard or TUI on top of the CLI, since the repo has no UI and developers running many parallel agents need at-a-glance state.
- Validate demand beyond stars: post to Show HN and relevant subreddits, and track whether users ask for team/shared features — current signals show zero HN/Reddit discussion, so real workflow lock-in is unproven.
- Instrument usage (opt-in telemetry or a hosted sync tier) to find the paid surface; without that, this remains a free utility.
Monetization
Unproven. No billing layer, NOASSERTION license, and no download or discussion signals to size willingness to pay. Plausible path is a free CLI plus a paid team tier for shared worktree/agent state and hosted sync — a hypothesis to test, not a validated market.
